Sunim (Gabriele Rose)

D9830 Nominated Participant

Rotary Peace and Conflict Studies Program :  Chulangkorn University Thailand

Sponsored by The Rotary Club of Claremont;     Counsellor PP Jack Parsons.

.

Bom Hyon Sunim is a Buddhist nun committed to empowering people in the practice of non violence. Her professional background is in social work and she has 25 years experience as a counsellor, educator and group worker. In 1996 she was ordained as a Buddhist nun and for 10 years she lived and studied in monasteries in Thailand and Korea. In 2004 while living in Korea, she was invited to join intensive training in Nonviolent Communication with Dr Marshall Rosenberg, international peacemaker, mediator, and founder of the NVC approach. NVC® is an effective tool for individuals & couples, families, communities, and in international conflicts.  It is being taught in workplaces, schools, prisons and mediation centres around the globe

Sunim currently conducts courses in non violent communication skills for individuals, couples, families, carers, women, men, children, young people, teachers, professionals, prisoners and workers. She expects the Chulalongkorn University Peace Studies course will provide opportunities for learning new models, frameworks and skills in conflict resolution and mediation, as well as offering a unique opportunity to network with global brothers and sisters in the service of peace. She hopes it will also offer greater credibility in order to engage with decision makers at the highest levels of administration, legislation and government. But most exciting is the possibility to share this learning with Rotarians so that across the length and breadth of Tasmania we can ensure there will be an effective peacemaker ready to share these skills with all who are interested to learn.

Hingor Chung

Outbound Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholar 2008    Tunghai University in Taichung

Next year, Hingor Chung (a languages teacher), will be on leave from Taroona High School for term one. She will be at Tunghai University in Taichung (Taiwan for 4 months) learning more about Chinese language and culture and representing Tasmania at Rotary functions. Hingor has been involved with Rotary through MUNA (Model United Nations Assembly) since 1999. MUNA is held every year in April in Deloraine. In 2006 the team representing IRAN won the state competition and went to Canberra for the nationals.

The teaching of Chinese is of continuing importance in Australia especially with tourism, international education and the resources boom. Hingor hopes to be in a position to develop curriculum resources (with internet and computers) and to introduce additional ‘hands on’ cultural aspects- such as martial arts, calligraphy and theatrical traditions into the Tasmanian classrooms. In 2006 Hingor took 3 student groups to China (June, October and December). This is Hingor’s first trip to Taiwan. Apart from the recent history and Chinese culture, the ‘above 3000metre’ mountains hold a certain allure.
