ROTARIANS
AGAINST MALARIA (RAM) District 9800,
D9830 (and Southern Region RAM / RAWCS) Current status
of the RAM programs in the Solomon Islands and PNG. |

The current emphasis is to get all people in Guadalcanal under chemically impregnated long life bed nets (LLN’s). All villages (approx 65,000) are now afforded such protection and steps are being taken to encompass the remaining approx 65,000 living in Honiara, the Capital. Rotary International is contributing some US$220,000 to this aspect of the program.
It is most pleasing to note that AusAid and the Global Fund have now committed some millions of dollars to the Solomon Islands (and Vanuatu) so in due course all people (nearly 600,000) in the Solomon's should be afforded the protection of LLN’s. Rotary will be working closely with AusAid and the Global Fund in the implementation of this program.
In PNG (population some 5.5 million) Rotary has been working closely with the World Health Organization and the PNG Department of Health since the late 90’s and over half of the 89 Districts in PNG now have the protection of Long Life Nets (LLN). The LLN’s have a five year life span. As Ron Seddon of the Rotary Club of Port Moresby says – to adopt a Village will probably save a life and will most certainly improve the general health and well-being of the local peoples. As in the Solomons significant in-roads are being made in reducing the incidence of malaria.
Rotarians can be proud of what has been achieved but much more remains to be done and your continuing support will make a difference. A small, medium or large village can be “Adopted” for the cost of $1000, $2000 or $3000 respectively.
