Tony was educated at Albura Street Primary School, Brighton Area School, Robert Cosgrove Secondary School and Hobart Technical College. At 16 he began a five year apprenticeship as a French Polisher at F H Valance & Son, Hobart, and then two years as foreman before beginning his own business, Ashmore Antiques in Richmond in 1969; antique furniture restoration and retail.

1998 Tony established the Heritage Furniture Restoration Unit at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. He is still working as a conservator of wooden objects, specializing in interiors of private and commercial buildings, churches, furniture and furnishings. Tony has managed and restored three Hobart Trams (1916, 1917, and 1942) for the Hobart City Council. Tony is a Past President of the Tasmanian Antique Dealers Association and is a Commonwealth Valuer for the Australian Cultural Gifts Programme.

Tony married Elizabeth Henderson in 1972 – Liz’s Father and Grandfather were both active Rotarians. She has a brother an active Rotarian. Tony and Liz have two children, Richard and Angela and two granddaughters, Sophia and Lucy.

Tony’s interests include social history, reading, vintage cars, coarse rugby, old pubs and Liz’s cooking.

Liz is a retired teacher. She has always supported Tony in his Rotary service and was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship from the Salamanca Club. She enjoys time to be involved with Sophia and Lucy and catching up with the family and friends. Her interests include cooking/entertaining, reading, knitting, sewing and any professional development related to food trends! She enjoys outings as a member of the Red Hat Society!
