Ian has a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering and worked in telecommunications, defence manufacturing and new technology enterprises in his early career. Over the past 22 years he and his wife Elizabeth have built from scratch an international award-winning event design and production company called Balloon Magic Pty Ltd. During this hectic period of entrepreneurship they have managed to see their four children graduate through the University of Tasmania, Ian was nominated for the 2004 Tasmanian of the Year Award and they have travelled through 50 countries with their business and private endeavours. Ian has served as the National President of the Balloon Industry Association in Australia and has pioneered the development of very large-scale promotional displays using latex balloons.
Ian has a long-standing passion for facilitating the entrepreneurial development of young people in Tasmania and introduced the National Enterprise Workshop Program, an Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program to the Engineering Faculty of the University of Tasmania, and has been the Australian Team Manager of study tours to Silicon Valley, examining start-up enterprises.
Rotary highlights have included seeing children’s lives being changed through ROMAC, being a GSE Team Leader to Denmark and witnessing the outcomes for team members and being the founding Chairman of Mentor Resources Inc. – a program of Rotarians mentoring small businesses throughout Tasmania.
Ian is the recipient of two Paul Harris Fellows from members of the Rotary Club of Scottsdale, Arizona, for humanitarian service.
Elizabeth has a career background in infant teaching, a life-long interest in music, an entrenched commitment to community and humanitarian service and a member of the Inner Wheel Club of Hobart Sunset. Both Ian and Elizabeth look forward to contributing to the future prosperity of District 9830.
