District 9830 Haiti Appeal 2010

July 26 2010 First Bike Shipment

Advice has been received that three containers containing 260 wheel chairs are shortly to be delivered to Les Cayes, Cap Hatien and Pignon in Haiti. They will be distributed by Rotary Clubs in those areas.

They are part of the 840 chairs to be purchased by Tasmanian Rotary from part of the money raised in District 9830.
Wheelchairs will be supplied through District 7670’s Wheelchair Foundation in North Carolina.

June 2010 - Distribution of money raised.

The Haiti Appeal has now concluded, with over$100,000 being contributed.
The Tasmanian Government has matched this amount.

Funds will be divided equally to the Rotary Foundation Haiti Appeal and a whewheelchairelchair program for those people badly injured by the earthquake.

Wheelchairs will be supplied through District 7670’s Wheelchair Foundation in North Carolina.

This program has already delivered over 4000 wheelchairs to developing nations in Central and Latin America.

Rotary Clubs on the ground in Haiti are in the process of identifying the needy and will be responsible for the distribution of wheelchairs.

Details of the project, including a video, can be found by on the District 7670 website.“Wheelchair Foundation”.

The video is compelling viewing. I am sure you will support the decision to funnel half of the D9830 Haitian Relief funds to the “Wheelchair Foundation of D7670”.

Appeal Concludes

3 May 2010

The Appeal in conjunction with the Tasmanian Government concluded on 16th April. Donations forwarded through the “Rotary International District 9830 Inc. [Haiti Appeal]” are eligible for matching funding, since they will be directed to on-the-ground support to the people of Haiti.

Rotary District 9830 has raised $96,710 for the Rotary Haiti Appeal through working with local corporates and businesses, local community groups and individuals. The Tasmanian Government has matched this meaning $193,240 will be channelled through Rotary to Haiti.

A message to all Rotarians of District 9830 from DG Ian

The magnitude of the tragedy in Haiti cannot be ignored and Rotary world-wide is gathering momentum to assist with a recovery program. Neighbouring Districts in the USA have for quite some time been assisting local Haiti Rotary Clubs with humanitarian programs. This has enabled the supply of early relief from those Districts possible, and will smooth the way for other Districts to partner effectively in the near future.

The Rotary International Board has taken the position that our organization is not a first responder to disaster, but rather a recovery responder once the needs to rebuild the area are known. This has proved particularly true with the effectiveness of funds raised by Clubs in our District in recent times in support of our achievements with the Victorian Bushfire Recovery program.

The success of our dollar-for-dollar partnership on that occasion with the Tasmanian Government has prompted the Premier of Tasmania to suggest a similar arrangement with an appeal for Haiti, to which I have accepted. The Government will match on a dollar-for-dollar basis cash contributions made to Rotary, Lions and Apex clubs in Tasmania specifically for the Haiti relief, on the basis funds will go directly into programs on the ground in Haiti. The Government will match donations up until 5th March 2010, with their total contribution being capped at $200,000.

The Premier has also invited the support of other organisations as well as the corporate sector to contact local clubs to ensure their efforts are included in the program. The matching contribution from the State will go through a special “Rotary International District 9830 Inc [Haiti Appeal]” account, established within our District for projects or Foundation activities nominated by us, where there is a direct linkage to recovery and restoration activities on the ground in Haiti.
