Science Engineering Challege - An Update

We have seen a significant growth in the Challenge since it commenced in Tasmania 6 years ago. For example, this year the number of students participating is up in all regions on 2008: Hobart - 17%, Launceston - 19.5%, North West Tasmania - 45%.

There were also some outstanding results achieved by the students in all three regions, for instance, the final score achieved by Launceston Christian School in their heat is the highest ever recorded for the Challenge (which is in its 10 yr nationally).

The state final will be held on Friday 13 August at the Action Packed - Elphin Stadium in Launceston. Student activities will commence at 10.00 am, and final testing and presentations will start at 2.15 pm and conclude by 3.00 pm.

The following schools have qualified for the Super Challenge (state final): Burnie High School, Marist Regional College, Launceston Christian School, Riverside High School, St Marys District School, Mount Carmel College, and Calvin Christian School (2 teams).

The Challenge is an outreach program conducted nationally by the University of Newcastle under the umbrella of Rotary. It is designed to inspire students to study science and engsceng1ineering at a senior level. Each challenge day, around 250 students participate in a series of exciting competitive activities. These activities are designed to demonstrate the varied and practical elements of a career in the science and engineering industries. The Challenge takes the students out of the classroom and gives them a day of fun, teamwork and discovery. More information.
