Council on Legislation

The whole list of resolutions and enactments can be downloaded from the link below.

PDG Lew Pretorius reports

I do make a special reference to Resolution 10-152---“To revise the qualifications for Governor nominee” Which in essence says that no Rotarian shall be selected as Governor nominee unless the Rotarian has served at least one year as Assistant Governor”

The resolutions referred to in the body of the download are possibly more pertaining to clubs and districts day to day activities, although there are 219 item’s-at this stage but those listed will assist me if I get a feel from the district clubs on how to vote.

Remembering, from my last experience—these resolutions and enactments are often changed by way of an amendment and/or even withdrawn. I would like clubs to respond directly to me, via email by end March.

Haiti Disaster:

From DG 9830 Ian Shuey (edited version of memo to Clubs)

I thought it appropriate to advise as to where we currently stand regarding support from our District.

Action is already taking place between Districts in North Amenica and Haiti. For instance the DGE of Haiti lost his home and business and with his family is in front of the palace on the street with nowhere to go! A local Rotary fund has been set up, but for us it is not tax-deductible.

The RI Board has taken the position that our organization is not a first responder to disaster but rather a recovery responder once the needs to rebuild the area are known. There are many Governments and NGO's like the Red Cross and Salvation Army that are in a position to respond initially. Rotary currently not having the organization or the physical response equipment or trained staff has been advised to leave that work to those who have been properly trained and who have a detailed plan.

It is obvious from media reports filtering through that Haiti needs Rotary but it needs us more than ever once these Disaster Relief groups leave the country and the real job of helping the survivors begins. That is what Rotary and its Foundation are good at.

Samoan Disaster

Sources on the ground in Samoa indicate that we should not send Donations in Kind (DIK) goods without first ensuring from Samoa what actual goods are required. We need to have someone at the other end designated to receive the goods, clear them from customs and arrange transport.

We anticipate there will be a need for education goods from Donations In Kind, ie. books, desks, chairs, pencils, etc. but first there is the need to re-establish the facilities on the ground and that could take some time.

The District 9830 Chairman of Rotary Australia World Community Service Terry Lobban is planning, subject to availability of funds, to send a shipping container of D-I-K goods as soon as the above detail is clear.

The attachment below provides before and after pictures of a Samoan School. This is currently being evaluated as a project that Rotary Volunteers from our District could be involved in the rebuilding.

Shelterbox Update 13 October 2009

The latest update shows stories about Shelterbox involvement in Samoa, Sumatra and the Philippines.

A message from Leigh Iles, Rotary Club of Youngtown ShelterBox District 9830 Representative.

"On behalf of ShelterBox can I thank the Clubs within our District that have supported our call for the sponsorship of more ShelterBoxes. The demand is now greater than ever.  Without YOUR KIND SUPPORT we would not be able to assist those survivors who have lost everything.

We have also received support from Individuals,Companies, other Charities and Church Groups for which we are eternally greatful.

Finally an extract from ADG District 9920 (RC of Apia Samoa) Rotarian Tuifaasisina Maraea Slade.

"I am humbly proud to be a Rotarian and whilst we may not be as loud as Red Cross we are certainly doing a great job going straight to the needy and touching the hearts of the people. To see the tears in their eyes as they hug you and the greatful smiles as they say "THANK YOU" convinces you ROTARY HAS MADE THE DIFFERENCE in their lives.

Tasman Peninsula Holiday Offer

Only days after the devastating bushfires in Victoria, Marian Larner, incoming President of the Rotary Club of Tasman Peninsula, conceived a plan to give comfort and respite to those affected by the bushfires.
It was the memory of her feelings of loss and inner hurt, six months after the Port Arthur incident in 1996, and the holidays that were then offered to her and other people on the Peninsula, by the community of Foster in NSW that sparked the idea.

That holiday started her healing because the people in Foster showed they cared and gave with compassion

Volunteers needed for Victorian Bushfire rebuilds

Rotary District 9830 is calling for expressions of interest from Rotary Clubs in Tasmania interested in assisting to rebuild the region near Traralgon South devastated by the Churchill fire. Work parties are sought in 2 areas. This will involve travelling to Victoria for a week’s stay
(A) Project A - fencing. This project is in partnership with Timber Communities Aust. (Tas) and seeks suitably experienced teams of 4/5 people. There must be at least one experienced tractor driver, 1 qualified chainsaw operator and 1 experienced farm fencer. The balance of the team need only to be prepared for the challenging and rewarding role of helping those in need. 4000 km. of fencing is to be replaced in this fire area alone. We now have tractors and post-drivers and a well equipped fencing toolkit on site plus some gathered experience of the working conditions. It is preferable for each team to have its own vehicle/s (e.g. flat tray 4X4). All sea transport, fuel costs and accommodation are being met by generous supporters. (This is the same for Project B)
Project B is for people not experienced in farm fencing but wishing to be involved in rehabilitation of gardens, painting & community projects etc. nominated by the local Relief Centre coordinators.

Expressions of interest should be directed to Ian Chalk at: ijchalk@bigpond.com - 64 42 3001 or 0419 337 355.

or Kevin Headlam at kevin.headlam@internode.on.net or 0409 976 526

Work Parties will travel to Victoria each Tuesday evening, departing for home the following Wednesday evening. Local Rotary clubs would encourage your attendance at meetings when possible on Mon & Tues. evenings where you will be made especially welcome.
(At this time TT-Line is offering vehicle transport and accommodation on the ferry to team participants) Rotarians and volunteers are covered by the Rotary Insurance Policy.

Victorian Bushfire Appeal

The Tasmania Government's generous offer to match our fund raising efforts dollar ffireor dollar has spurred many to take up the challenge not only among the Family of Rotary, but also in the wider Tasmanian community who recognise Rotary as a community organisation that can be trusted.

In the space of five short weeks people have contributed in excess of five hundred and fifty thousand dollars to assist those people who have in many cases lost everything as a consequence of this disaster. The trust that has been placed in us by the community is indeed very gratifying and we have the responsibility now to ensure that these funds reach those in need..

Tasmania Rotary hasl forward the money to the Victorian Rotary Districts involved with the fire and now have a representativ/ PDG Michael Perkins, on their management committee.

Great Australian Bike Ride

Australian Rotarians have embarked on the longest orgtasanized bike ride in their nation's history: a seven-month, 18,000 km journey to raise awareness of Australian Rotary Health, and the need to fund mental illness research.

Riders took off from Melbourne on 21 March, then took a boat to their first stop, Hobart, Tasmania, looping around the island before returning to the mainland.
Pictured is the group in Tasmania.

Over the next seven months, riders will circle the country counterclockwise, stopping in the capital cities of each of Australia's states and territories before ending in Melbourne on 10 October. Over 100 participants, many of them Rotarians, plan to ride one or more of the nine stages of the course. Five of the riders expect to complete the entire route.
