Beyond Blue partnership launched
Rotary Tasmania, District 9830 has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Beyond Blue organisation. The main focus of the joint agreement between Beyondblue and District 9830, is to raise awareness for depression and anxiety, and to remove the stigma from the words Mental Health. The partnership will see events such as health forums and mental he
ath days held throughout the state.
This partnership was launched with a gala dinner at Ulverston on 16 October.
Pictured is DG Ted Richie welcoming Leonie Young , CEO of Beyond Blue with Jenny Simms President of the Ulverstone West Rotary Club which hosted the Gala Dinner.
Beyondblue CEO Leonie Young said this is a great opportunity for people to find out more about the signs and symptoms of anxiety and depression, and where to get help. "Around one million people in Australia live with depression and a further two million have an anxiety disorder, yet less than half seek help. So it's important to encourage people to talk openly about their mental health," she says. "We hope that everyone will acknowledge that it's OK to talk about how you're feeling, that support and effective treatments are available and no one needs to try to get better on their own."
Guest speaker was Nathan Thompson ex Hawthorn and North Melbourne AFL player who told of his struggle and recovery from depression.
Similar events will be held in Hobart and Launceston later.
Half a million working days are lost every month to depression in Australia. See details about Beyond Blue on their website http://www.beyondblue.org.au

National Youth Science Forum student heads to London
Emily Wilson from Fahan School attended the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF), in Perth in January 2010. She was sponsored by Rotary Club of Salamanca. Her exposure to science and likeminded people during the NYSF motivated her to apply for an International Science Program. She was fortunate enough to be selected to represent Australia at the London International Youth Science Forum, LIYSF.
300 students attended the LIYSF in July this year, and represented over 60 different countries. The forum had a recurring theme of climate change and sustainable energy sources for the future -“The Global Challenge”. With world class scientists delivering lectures and hosting debates, participants were inspired to make a difference in their scientific futures.
Emily is pictured here working in the chemistry lab at Oxford University.
