RYDA provides first quality road safety information to youth to help ensure when they commence driving they have the best road safety education possible.
Rotary Club of Devonport North organised the 2010 program at Camp Clayton held over 8 days on May 17th and 18th. and June 15th. to 22nd 2010.
A report by Kay Kidd RYDA Organiser NW Region.
Additional schools involved this year were Wynyard High School and Yolla District High School. This made a total of 15 schools and represented 100% involvement of all secondary schools from Sheffield to Wynyard with a potential of 1390 students.
Total student attendance was 1151 with 62 teachers from 15 schools.
Thanks to the following Presenters:
“My Wheels” -Margy Badcock from ANCA Insurance (1 day), Rotarian John Cook (2 days) and Rotarian Bruce Gowans (6 days).
Driving trainer Laszlo Faludi was a new presenter this year and presented the Hazard Perception segment on some days and drove the Stopping Distance car on others. We were fortunate this year to obtain Scott Abbott, a wheelchair bound accident victim to assist our usual presenter Matthew Woodberry with the Crash Survivor segment. We also had counselors on hand from the Road Trauma Support Group and they were able to help several students from the Police sessions. Our sincere thanks go to all 19 presenters who were involved during the program.
Volunteers:
Eight Rotary Clubs from Latrobe to Wynyard were involved in providing group leaders and road marshals for each day.. Sixty Rotarians from 8 clubs were involved during the 8 days of the program and the organising committee is very grateful for their commitment.
Sponsorship:
This year we were fortunate to have sponsorship of the State Government who underwrote the considerable costs involved in staging the program. Local Councils provided sponsorship to assist schools in their areas with transport costs. Thanks to Camp Clayton management and staff for their assistance and some subsidising of costs.
The program focuses on attitude and awareness with the aim of making the students better people on the road. Presenters include Road Safety experts, driving instructors, Police , recovering survivors of road crashes and drug and alcohol educators.
