South: Bernadette Black has written her book called, Brave Little Bear which was launched late last year in Hobart. She addresses the issues about becoming a parent at 16, the adversity of teenage pregnancy and the decision to have her son, who is now 14. She also tackles the issues such as, finishing her schooling and going on to complete a Bachelor of Nursing. Most importantly, her story shows how any mum can be a great mum, against the highest of adversity. Bernadette's passion is sharing this message with other people in the community of all ages that have seen adversity, and how everyone can reach their dreams even in the face of massive life challenges. Bernadette addresses how we as a community can decrease the large numbers of teenage pregnancy in Tasmania, through encouraging education, so that teens can have the teenage lives they deserve. The above mentioned book is currently being utilised throughout health care and education in Australia.

David discusses the accident, his injuries and how his life has dramatically changed as a result of it. Both Anglicare and Relationships Australia provide a free and confidential counselling for problem gamblers.
My position has been created to develop community awareness of the issues around problem gambling.
The presentation is balanced, and certainly is not designed to lecture about the evils of gambling. It presents a very compelling snapshot of what is happening in our community, and what is being done at various levels to address problem gambling with particular reference to the impact of electronic gaming machines (pokies OR EGM's).
The program recognises that 98% of our population do gamble as a recreational outlet, in a responsible manner. However the repercussions for the community which arise form the 0.5% per cent of the population with an EGM gambling problem is very sobering, and very real.

Statewide:Jane Crosswell. Red Cross,
Manager Marketing Fundraising & Communications
I would like to offer you
the opportunity to have a speaker attend your meeting to
give you an update on our activities, locally,
nationally and internationally.
As you may be aware, Australian Red Cross provides
relief in times of crisis, care when it's needed most
and commitment when others turn away.
You will certainly be aware of our work in Disaster and
Emergency Services, First Aid Training and our blood
donation program. But are you aware that in Tasmania we
provide 26 services to help the most vulnerable in our
community. These services include programs for the
frail and elderly, exciting activities in the area of
youth, drug and awareness programs, mental health and
even prisoner support programs.
With the increasing threat from events caused by climate
change, our vital work also continues internationally
through the International Red Cross and Red Crescent
Society representatives around the globe.
We are proud of the contribution our programs make to
the communities in which we work. For that reason, we
have a desire to work harder to engage and inform people
about our activities. We recognize that without the
valuable support and generosity of the community, many
of our services could not continue.

Update August 2011
Statewide; The proposed guest speakers are senior officers from the 12th/40th Battalion, The Royal Tasmania Regiment the only infantry battalion on the island. The 12th/40th is made up of units from Hobart and Launceston with its origins in the Boer War and the 1st AIF. The Battalion holds more Battle and Theatre Honours on the Queens and Regimental Colours than any other unit in the Australian Defence Force.
Today the 12th/40th Battalion is an Army Reserve unit under the South Australian based 9th Brigade. Despite being an Army Reserve unit, the Battalion has deployed around 21% of its members over the past 18 months to various operations and exercises on the mainland and overseas.
These deployments have been to the Solomon Islands, Timor Leste, Afghanistan, Rifle Company Butterworth (Malaysia), World Youth Day, Victorian Bushfires and border security in North-Western Australia with the Navy. Currently there are members heading away to participate on further rotations of Rifle Company Butterworth and border security.
Even as a Reserve unit, the requirements are high along with training and regular parading. The 12th/40th Battalion is currently training members for the High Readiness Reserve, the Reserve Response Force and any future requirements under the Defence White Paper. It is an exceptionally busy period.
If any Clubs would like a guest speaker to attend from the 12th/40th Battalion, they can contact

Rites of Passage for boys into Manhood. The Pathways
Foundation is a high impact social venture
that provides contemporary, community based
Rites of Passage programs. Since 1995, the
national, award winning Pathways to Manhood
program has been transforming the lives of
Australian
families.
Our boys need help making the emotional
shift from boy to young man. Traditional
societies recognized that the future health of
their communities depended upon having healthy
men instead of overgrown boys. The traditional
pathway for this transition is known as a "Rite
of Passage."
Our contemporary Rite of Passage is a
safe, carefully designed program for boys into
manhood on a 5 day bush camp on Bruny Island for
boys aged 13 - 15 and their fathers or male
care giver. It helps teenagers evolve from
'boy psychology' to 'healthy man
psychology'.
The Pathways Foundation is a registered
harm prevention
charity.
Pathways can provide speakers to talk
about our Rites of Passage programs.

French Learn Grow "Feeding the
World" In recent years there has been a paradigm
shift occurring in agriculture and food
production. The same change has been occuring
amongst nutritionists. This is towards a more
ecologically and environmentally sound
agricultural production
system.
Over many years Bruce French has been
building perhaps the most extensive and
comprehensive database of food plants around the
world. His aim is to make this information
available to the poorest of people in developing
countries, who are generally subsistence
farmers. Bruce believes that by growing the
right crop in the right location in the right
season, far simpler, more manageable and
sustainable production systems are
possible.
A District committee is supporting Bruce
to take this information to the
world.

has just returned from his deployment with the International
Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in
Timor-Leste, where he was an Watsan Delegate, managing water and
sanitation projects in rural areas of the country.
Whilst back he hope's to introduce some Tasmanian service clubs
to CVTL, the Red Cross of Timor-Leste.
This country of 1 million people is suffering food shortage, 80% youth unemployment and is ranked with the lowest Human Development Index outside of the African continent.
CVTL is a young organisation, being founded in 2002. Whilst it has a very committed staff and is led by an extremely dedicated board and Secretary-General, it suffers from inadequate funding and is struggling to maintain basic services through its 13 branches.

Posted 26 August 2010
A fascinating talk about the risk from tsunamis. Sharon gave particular emphasis on what could happen in Tasmania.
We were reminded that in 1938 200 people were swept out to sea at Bondi — 5 died. Tasmania's biggest threat is from a trench off New Zealand that could cause marine effects on areas around our coast.
Complacency in our community is the riskiest element. Pictures of the turbulence created by these waves
is frightening even from a 10cm rise in sea level.
